Boggy Creek

This morning I went to Boggy Creek Farms for their market days. What a delight! Boggy Creek is a full-scale organic farm, smack-dab in the middle of East Austin. Took some hunting to find them, but it was well worth it. Rows and rows of yummy plants, clucky little hens bustling about, smiling people telling you all about the different produce... Wow. I wanted to offer to help out in the fields, or at least crawl under a fig tree and chat with the chickens. Instead, I bought long beans, goat cheese, figs, a cucumber, a bell pepper, and some mustard greens. Just as I enjoy the veggies and herbs from my own garden so much more than those from the store, I love buying from people who are trying to swim against the tide of mass-produced, unloved, commoditized foods. I mean, I'll never completely stop shopping at HEB or become some sort of purist. But I do think that food is more nutritious when it's fresh, organic and loved. So, if you're in Austin and you've never been, why not visit Boggy Creek or stop at the Austin Farmer's Market this weekend? It's a lot more fun than Central Market, even, and it's good for the soul. (I mean, doesn't Central Market make you feel like a complete yuppie snot sometimes? I think it's gourmet yuppie kibble. I enjoy being a yuppie snot sometimes, but really, being a good neighbor is better.)
