Musical mementos

Certain bands and certain songs just plug me immediately into specific times in my life. Right now, "The Swing" by INXS has just popped up on my Itunes "100 Random Songs" list. Suddenly, I can remember vividly being in my little dorm room at Jester during my freshman and sophmore years (same room both years, 13th floor west). I remember exactly how I felt at that time in my life, though not really specifics... it's more of a memory of what it was like in my head at the time. Next? "Every Ghetto, Every City" by Lauryn Hill. Well, that's my R&B diva years, driving my green mustang with the sunroof open, singing my head off. Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly" is a direct route to the Fall I lived in San Antonio, doing "Into the Woods" at ACT theatre. Angelique Kidjo takes me to New Orleans, and Jazzfest, when dancing with Bethy and my favorite music cured me of the horrible blues I'd been in for a year. The Meat Puppets is next on the list -- well, that's my "alterna-chick" stage when I dated Mr Goatee and Piercings, thinking I was edgy. Oh, and that's followed by Counting Crows and Sarah MacLachlan and Alanis Morrissette, thanks to the inevitable heartbreak he caused (which I knew was coming from the very beginning. Yeah, I signed up for that) Fleetwood Mac, ahhh, that was senior year in highschool when I "dated" briefly the cute guy from the other high school's choir, who broke my heart when he sort of faded away with no explanantion... Until 5-6 years later, when I learned he came out of the closet. Oh, thanks! What a relief. Wish you could've told me back then, though. You'd have saved me a year of additional self-loathing... More thoughts to come as the playlist shuffles. Anybody got any distinct song memories to share? Is this thing on?

1) What guy from which HS? You can use initials.
2) Breakup music - all hail Polly Jean! Uh Huh Her is a sublime soundtrack to a nasty stinky breakup. And when you're getting your groove back - the Donnas.
3) The rest of the nostalgia music connection makes my head hurt to think about, but I'm embarrassed to admit I was singing along to Hot Blooded the other day @ the Thai place of the chicken knuckles. Hate to tell you my reactions to Black Flag or the Sex Pistols. I get giddy like a little girl - reminders of the smell of clove cigarettes and going through import records and zines at Bill's. Summer of 1986 - REM! Of course. OMG - some of my friends were playing at the Elbow Room here a few months ago and totally did South Central Rain for me, acoustic, and I humiliated myself by singing along! They also did some Pixies. Sigh.

1) Shannon. From Pearce HS. And yes, I know I should've known, but I didn't. He didn't!

2) Oh, The Donnas! Smooches to them.

3) Hot Blooded! That leads me to admit a shameful fact. Yesterday at lunch, Loverboy's "Working for the Weekend" came on and I said to M, "you know, this song kind of rocks." And he said, "I know."

4) Bill's. I loved that joint, but was always scared to go in. Too many crates of Megadeth.
