Tell me I'm not the only one

Napoleon Dynamite? Why does everybody love this movie? M and I tried to watch it this weekend and by the school dance scene, we were just so uncomfortable and uninterested that we stopped watching because we really didn't care enough to stick with the characters through all that ookiness. I mean, sure, some funny catchphrases, but what's the what? We did get a chance to catch up somewhat this weekend. Our first tomatoes are already eaten (cherry type, very tasty) and so far, there have only been a few patches of bermuda trying to come back. The bamboo from over the back fence is mounting an agressive comeback campaign behind the barrier, but every time we see another one of those tell-tale "volcanoes" of a new shoot coming out, we whack that sucker back. You can't trust it. Ever-vigilant against bermuda and bamboo... that's us. Uh, is that just as geeky as Napoleon? Yuh, probably so.

Bamboo is a beast. Right now the Histrionic Mombot is fighting honeysuckle, also a rough fight. Keep hope alive! I still haven't seen Napoleon Dynamite. Maybe at some point I'll stumble across it, but not anytime soon.

I absolutely H*A*T*E*D that movie. I'm glad I'm not the only one who couldn't make it to the end.

Because I like cognitive reinforcement, I checked out some of the reviews. Ebert -- say what you will about him, but I often agree with his p.o.v. -- said that the ookiness came from feeling like the movie laughed down at the characters. You're not invited to relate. You're invited to stand aside in superiority and snort at the poor goofballs. No thanks. I was a poor goofball.

And for you hipsters out there, the Onion A/V club panned it to.

But can anybody tell me a different perspective on why you actually liked it?

OMG, I'm so glad to hear that some other creative types didn't like that movie either! My sis and I didn't even make it to the high school dance... It just all seemed completely pointless.
