Tidy little garden work zone
Sunday was a gorgeous, warm day. But it rained on Saturday, so the ground was too wet to be planted and I couldn't gather more horse poo... Instead, I worked on a long-ignored project and built myself a nice work area around to the side of the veggie garden. What I did was this: I expanded the mulch zone around the veggie beds all the way to the fence, by laying down cardboard and topping it with the Christmas tree mulch (which smells delicious!). Then I built a little platform with bricks and bamboo canes to elevate the bags of leaves above the damp earth and keep them dryer longer. Did the same thing with the stacks of firewood, which have been crumbling into dirt. Then, I moved the compost bin (not so easy) and moved the old garden table over to the side to serve as sort of a potting bench. I dumped some potting soil into a big plastic pot and put it beneath the bench, using its mate as a sort of tool bin. Neat! Then I gathered up all the tools and tucked them next to the table under the eaves of the house, so they won't get rusty but will be handy. There's still such a long way to go in the backyard, but it's nice to have one project phase completed and one area tidy. The onions are planted in their little soldier rows. The strawberries are tucked in and cozy. The tomato bed is a work in progress... seeds have sprouted! And now it's cold again. But I did get some Chinese New Year money from my inlaws so I get to buy a couple of little trees! ;-)
